AbstractClients reporting incestuous abuse that continues into adulthood represent a relatively small sample of child sexual abuse survivors, but one that is rarely researched or discussed in clinical training. Existing cases studies suggest these clients often experience sadistic, prolonged abuse. Abuse may involve multiple perpetrators and overlap with organised and semi-organised abuse. Survivors tend to be chronically unwell and severely dissociative.

Abstract: Hypnosis was the first Western form of psychotherapy, yet it remains underutilized in part because of insufficient understanding of its neural basis. Hypnosis involves highly focused attention, coupled with dissociation of aspects of awareness, an increase in cognitive flexibility, and an enhanced ability to modulate perception. Considerable evidence has emerged regarding this regarding underlying brain mechanisms, including studies employing event-related potentials, PET and fMRI.

Abstract: This presentation will describe some of the key insights that I have gleaned over the last 35 years of treating child and adolescent dissociative disorders. Research suggests that dissociation is a highly predictive symptom in young people leading to potential disruption of placements, at risk behaviors, and hospitalizations.

AbstractWhat is the nature of psychotic symptoms, and what relevance do they have to dissociation and dissociative disorders? For many decades, trauma and dissociation clinicians have complained – rightly so – that the disorders of those we work with are not adequately recognized by the wider mental health community. Misdiagnosis of traumatized individuals as psychotic appears to be common, which subjects them to inappropriate, ineffective and, at times, dangerous treatments.

Abstract:IFS is an elegant ego state model which has appealed to a wide range of clinicians – some 10,000+ over the world have been trained - many of whom would never have learned to work with ego states without it. Curiously and currently, IFS teaches that all clinicians need is IFS as IFS will treat everyone and, although, this is true for many people, it doesn’t work as well with people with complex trauma disorders. Learning the basics of Internal Family Systems is important for many reasons.

Abstract: This presentation will consist of three linked presentations which explore contemporary issues in organized abuse and its treatment. The presenters will discuss current research about organized abuse, and provide an overview of the various treatment approaches for clients who present with a history of organized and extreme abuse. Such clients are almost invariably highly dissociative and the presentation will explore how to work with such dissociative presentations.
