Studies, and master clinicians have pointed to the power of the relationship between therapist and client. However, there's a discrepancy between how powerful the relationship is in therapy and the amount of time and attention given to it in training. While transference and counter-transference are sometimes addressed; for this to be useful, it requires the therapist to be aware of his/her own self, defenses, triggers, history, etc.

Since the development of EMDR in the early 1990s, a large body of research has shown that it is efficacious for PTSD. Clinicians and researchers have found positive treatment effects beyond PTSD for more complicated conditions. Unfortunately, clinicians soon discovered that EMDR seemed to move complex trauma patients into dysregulated states rather than towards the expected, adaptive resolution of targeted traumatic memories.

As therapists continue to see a need for increased trauma-informed services and approaches to mental health, becoming attuned to the differences between simple trauma, complex trauma, and dissociation is essential for determining how to proceed with respect to providing relevant treatment.   By widening the lens through which therapists view and understand trauma, they make space for improved treatment outcomes and a more attuned therapeutic approach that lends to a more client-centered therapy that is tailored to each client’s unique needs and symptoms.
