Introduction to the Handbook of Complex Trauma and Dissociation in Children
Abstract
Dissociation in children remains a frequently misunderstood phenomenon, significantly affecting the delivery and outcomes of treatment for those impacted by severe and chronic trauma. This workshop provides an overview of the newly released Handbook of Complex Trauma and Dissociation in Children: Theory, Research, and Clinical Applications, highlighting the latest advancements in understanding complex trauma and dissociation in children. Participants will be guided through an exploration of key developments in theory, assessment, research, and clinical practice, gaining an overview of the current landscape of complex trauma and dissociation in children. Fundamental assessment approaches and treatment modalities will be reviewed, as well as the interconnectedness of various therapeutic approaches and how they intersect and differentiate in the treatment of childhood complex trauma. Unique challenges faced by children exposed to prolonged trauma will be addressed, ensuring clinicians leave with a well-rounded understanding of the evolving field. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or new to this area, this workshop offers a concise yet comprehensive insight into the growing domain of childhood dissociation and trauma therapy.

Presenter: Jill Hosey MSW, RSW, LICSW
Presenter Bio: Jill Hosey, MSW RSW LICSW, is a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist in private practice, providing trauma therapy to persons across the lifespan, integrating a variety of trauma, attachment and dissociation focused theories and modalities. Jill is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and EMDR Trainer, a Trainer with the AGATE Institute and Faculty with the ISSTD’s Professional Training and EMDR Therapy Training Programs. Jill has presented extensively on integrating the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) into EMDR and sits on the Clinical Advisory Board at Unyte. Jill is the lead author of the Clinical Guidelines and considerations for integrating the Safe and Sound Protocol into EMDR Therapy, a chapter on Therapeutic presence and the therapeutic relationship as both trigger and container to healing in E. Christenson’s (Ed.), Perspectives of Dissociative Identity Response: Ethical, Historical, and Cultural Issues, and the co-editor and contributing author for the Handbook for Complex Trauma and Dissociation in Children: Theory, Research, and Clinical Applications (Routledge, 2025). She is a Fellow of the ISSTD and the winner of the 2022 ISSTD Distinguished Achievement Award and 2023 ISSTD President’s Award of Distinction.
Presenter: Ana Gómez MC, LPC
Presenter Bio: Ana M Gómez, MC, LPC, is the founder and director of the AGATE Institute in Phoenix, AZ, with close to 30 years in clinical experience. She is a psychotherapist, author, and international speaker on complex and developmental trauma, generational wounds, and dissociation in children and adolescents. She has led workshops and keynote presentations worldwide to thousands of clinicians. Ana is a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD). Ana graduated from Arizona State University in 2003 with a Master of Counseling degree.
Ana is the author of EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment, and Dissociation and several book chapters and articles on using EMDR therapy with children and adolescents. She also co-authored with Dr. Francine Shapiro an article on using EMDR therapy with children published in 2013, and contributed substantially to the children's section in the 3rd edition of Dr. Shapiro's book. Ana received the 2011 "Distinguished Service Award" from the Arizona Play Therapy Association and the 2012 Sierra Tucson "Hope Award."
Ana adapted the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) to children and created the "Butterfly Journey" (C-GTEP), as well as the Parenting Wheel and the Group Parent Empowerment Protocol (G-PEP). She is also an approved GTEP trainer. Ana is also the author of the upcoming book EMDR-Sandtray-Based Therapy: Healing Complex Trauma and Dissociation Across the Lifespan and a co-editor of the comprehensive upcoming volume “The Handbook of Complex Trauma and Dissociation in Children.” She is also the author of eight children's books and therapeutic tools that address trauma and EMDR therapy. Ana received the 2011 "Distinguished Service Award" from the Arizona Play Therapy Association and the 2012 Sierra Tucson "Hope Award" and the EMDRIA Francine Shapiro Award” in 2023.
