Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: Considerations in Complexity and Multiplicity

Abstract
This workshop may serve as an introduction for clinicians to the potential role of psychedelic medicines in the care of complex trauma and dissociation and in intergenerational healing. The presentation will familiarize attendees with the current shift in paradigm from parallel pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments to a new model of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. The presenters hope to equip emerging and seasoned clinicians alike with the information necessary to address questions from both colleagues and patients, and to consider the relevance of this emerging therapy to their own practice. The presentation will explore and attempt to answer the following questions:

  • For which clients living with complexity and multiplicity is psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy appropriate?
  • What are potential benefits and risks of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy with this population?
  • What are contraindications to psychedelic-assisted generally and for those with complexity/multiplicity specifically?
  • What are ethical and current legal considerations around access to and provision of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy?
  • What might models of collaboration and shared care between practitioners of established psychotherapies and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy practitioners look like?
  • How might psychedelic medicines contribute to intergenerational healing?

The presentation will not explore the actions of specific psychedelic medicines or review their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The presentation will conclude with an exploration of potentials for intergenerational healing. Resources will be provided to further assist interested clinicians in learning more about psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and its applications.

This session was originally presented as a live conference session in April 2021.
