As if Working with Teenagers Wasn’t Already Challenging Enough!

Abstract
For many years, the practice of psychotherapy for dissociative disorders was largely focused on working with adult survivors. Over the last 10 to 15 years, there has been increased recognition and focus on working with younger trauma survivors in developmentally appropriate ways to more effectively reduce or eliminate the need for dissociative processes as an ongoing coping mechanism. A clear advantage of this approach is that the earlier developmentally these coping mechanisms are addressed, the less firmly entrenched they are.

In this webinar, we will explore the complexities of working with the dissociative adolescent, how various modalities can assist in the therapeutic process in strengthening affect regulation and diminishing the need for dissociation as a primary coping mechanism. This webinar will also explore some of the widely differing circumstances that you may be presented with a dissociative adolescent client, how these varying circumstances may dictate the way in which therapy is conducted. We will explore how they are similar to and different from working with traumatized adults. We will explore in what ways they can be more challenging and some effective ways of meeting those challenges. Various therapeutic modalities as well as many practical tools for working with this population will be presented.

At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Describe the five broad sets of circumstances under which traumatized adolescents may present for therapy.
  • Describe these broad circumstances and the impact this may have on providing effective therapy.
  • Describe four different components of therapeutic alliance and therapist characteristics that facilitate positive therapeutic outcomes.
  • |Describe at least one practical intervention for each of the four domains of the BASK model of dissociation that can facilitate client growth.

Presenter Bio: Robert Slater, BS, MSW, LCSW-R: (licensed clinical social worker) has been working with traumatized individuals for the past 20 years. He began his career working in residential programs for abused, neglected and adjudicated adolescents. He followed this with work in a special education program for emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled children and adolescents. He has, for the last 10 years, owned and operated a group psychotherapy practice that has focused on offering services to both children and adults with a special emphasis on treating traumatic stress and dissociative disorders. Robert is Co-founder of the Centerstate New York Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, is a former board member of ISSTD, Chair’s the child and adolescent special interest group, is a member of the finance and communications and marketing committee.
