Assessing for Dissociation: Improving Treatment Outcomes to Promote Post-traumatic Growth in Trauma Therapy with Children and Yout
Abstract
Young individuals with complex trauma make up high percentages of caseloads in child welfare and clinical mental health settings (Kisiel et al., 2009), yet graduate programs and post-graduate professional training often lack the much needed attention around thorough assessment for post-traumatic responses, including dissociation. Once in practice, clinicians may encounter children and youth who have experienced complex trauma and experience dissociation or dissociative disorders, which often present as peculiar and difficult behaviors that may easily be misdiagnosed, or have been previously missed. The symptomatology of dissociation for young clients can feel equally confusing and highly distressing, yet is not usually reported unless a clinician initiates an exploration into the meaning of the presenting symptoms and behaviours. Normalization of dissociation and dissociative disorders within the child and youth trauma field must draw attention to the underlying inner experiences that guide behaviors that are often viewed as problematic and labelled as the issue, as without this information, broader systems and clinicians may not recognize dissociative symptoms in traumatized children and youth, which impacts treatment outcomes across the lifespan. This introductory workshop is intended to promote curiosity for clinicians to both identify and explore the story and meaning behind dissociative symptoms in children and youth, as a means of improving treatment outcomes and promoting post traumatic growth in trauma work with children and youth. Clinicians attending this workshop will gain information around accurate screening, assessment, and recognition of dissociation and dissociative disorders in children and youth to allow for thorough case conceptualization and treatment planning, symptom reduction and healing, and post-traumatic growth. Theories of dissociation and various child and youth screening and assessment measures will additionally be discussed, including a discussion about the ‘why, when, and how’ we assess for dissociation in children and youth.
This presentation was originally presented as a live conference session in October 2022.
