Course Description

The course will focus on the etiology of chronic trauma, its clinical picture, tools of assessment, the phase oriented approach to trauma and treatment pitfalls and therapeutic alliance. The course is partly didactic, based on the assigned readings, and partly discussion of the “Case of Erica”, a teaching case which unfolds in a naturalistic progression over 4 classes.

Course Completion Requirements

Course completion requires attendance, participation in sessions, and completion of session and overall evaluations. APA continuing education credits will only be awarded for live attendance for 50 minutes out of every hour of training. 

To receive ASWB ACE credit, participants must participate and attend live the full time of all course sessions and complete session and overall evaluations.

For in-person courses participants are required to sign in and out of each session.

Target Audience

Licensed mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health counselors, accredited psychotherapists, etc.) who are interested in developing their skills in treating clients with chronic trauma related disorders. 

This course content is at the beginning/intermediate level.

Deborah Cohen, LCSW has been involved in treating individuals with eating disorders and dissociation for much of her career. Certified in family and couples therapy, she is also the former Coordinator of both the Outpatient Eating Disorders Program at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY as well as the Inpatient Eating Disorders Program at Holliswood Hospital in Queens, NY. 

She worked as a research clinician for first responders who developed PTSD in response to the 9/11 attacks. She has taught at the undergraduate and graduate level, maintains a private practice in Manhasset and Croton-on-Hudson, NY and consults privately.

She has presented workshops on eating disorders and dissociation at the ISSTD Annual Conference and at the Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders' Annual Meeting. She is a faculty member in the ISSTD Professional Training Program.

She holds an MSW in Social Work from the Columbia School of Social Work and an BS in Music Therapy from the New York University School of Education. 

Fees for in-person and teleseminar courses include continuing education (CE) credits. Continuing education credits are available for all teleseminar courses as well as US and Canada-based in-person courses.
