Expertise in Focus: DID Lived Experience Through the Lens of Photovoice

June 11, 2026

Abstract

People with lived experience offer unique expertise derived from their real-life experiences with mental health conditions, which cannot be learned through theoretical concepts. They are critical in reducing stigma, enhancing empowerment, and providing insights into the mental health systems. Their knowledge and expertise strengthen advocacy, consultation, research, and education endeavors, and they bring diverse perspectives shaped by their cultural backgrounds and personal journeys.

Photovoice is a participatory research method where participants use photography to express their understanding and perspectives related to specific community issues, guided by a central research question. Photovoice is designed to empower individuals, especially groups experiencing marginalization, by amplifying their wisdom and promoting a platform to influence decisions affecting their lives.

This webinar introduces these methods as a framework for centering the voice of community members with the experience of trauma and dissociation. The presentation will include an overview of PAR and Photovoice, including their roots in emancipatory and community-engaged pedagogy. Members of a PAR team will share insight from their project focused on best practices through highlighting achievements and challenges. The webinar will conclude with an exploration of some of the ways attendees can leverage organizational strengths and community lived experience to support the creation of future participatory action research in their agencies and institutions.
