Over 35 Years of Unmasking Dissociation: The SCID-D Interview’s Use in Assessment and Treatment

June 7, 2024

Abstract
Reliable assessment of dissociation is essential for effective treatment of trauma survivors. The SCID-D Interview, considered the gold standard in the field, is an interactive, semi-structured interview for assessing dissociation in adolescents and adults (1). Over three decades of worldwide research and clinical use has proven the SCID-D’s ability to assess dissociative symptoms and disorders. Moreover, the SCID-D uncovers previously hidden dissociation in individuals suffering from PTSD, complex PTSD, and various other mental health conditions.

The SCID-D’s value extends beyond diagnosis. When administered by a skilled and empathetic interviewer, the SCID-D can yield meaningful treatment benefits, both in enhancing the therapeutic relationship and in eliciting rich therapeutically relevant information about a person’s inner world. This presentation will draw upon over 35 years of scientific evidence validating the utility of the SCID-D Interview which implements Steinberg’s Five Component Model of Dissociation Assessment.
