PTSD and Dissociation in the Perinatal Period--Creating a Trauma-Informed Continuum of Care

Abstract
The purpose of this workshop is to advance clinical care and research on interventions for childbearing parents with maltreatment-related PTSD and dissociation. The state of the science is evolving toward jointly addressing unmet maternal mental health needs and preventing intergenerational transmission of trauma and vulnerability. The time is ripe to enhance trauma-specific perinatal mental health and develop inter-professional approaches. The first segment of the workshop will present research illustrating bio-psycho-social impacts of maltreatment related PTSD on childbearing experience and outcomes.  The second segment will review relevant theories and present qualitative studies of what women want during the childbearing year to address trauma and maternal development needs in tandem.  The third segment will provide an overview of existing universal, targeted, and specialist intervention studies and describe ways that mental health professionals can connect with perinatal services to build a trauma-informed continuum of care.
