Presenter: Lou Himes, PsyD
Presenter Bio: Lou Himes, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist and gender specialist in the state of New York. They identify as gender non-binary and use they/them/theirs pronouns. Trained in the tradition of psychodynamic psychotherapy, Lou also maintains a strong commitment to social justice and aspires to play an active role in eliminating mental health disparities for members of queer communities. This commitment is evident in their research on the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in conservative religious environments. They live near Ithaca, New York with their spouse, 14 year old son, and the cutest little chipin (chihuahua/miniature pinscher mix) in the whole world. For fun, they enjoy podcasting with their spouse on the intersections of religion and psychology (The Parallel Process Prodcast), gardening, hiking, wood working, mushroom foraging, and updating their 19th century farm house. Lou has more than 10 years experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community in New York City. They are a WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) certified specialist in mental health and provide consultation regarding the current WPATH Standards of Care (7) guidelines for the appropriate treatment of transgender individuals. They are also part of the ISST-D certificate training program and are developing a specialization in the intersections of transgender identity and trauma. In addition to their work in full time private practice, Lou also offers a variety of educational opportunities for organizations or individual practitioners seeking to provide competent care to queer individuals. This includes basic practices for helping queer and transgender individuals feel safe and welcomed into one’s office, holy space, community, and/or business. They hold a PsyD in Clinical Psychoogy from the Rosemead School of Psychology.
