AbstractDeep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a clinical approach to the treatment of traumatic experiences which has been developed from an understanding of brainstem responses to adversity. AbstractThis discussion will describe the essential elements of the knowledge and skills of supervision and consultation with the goal of empowering more of us to participate in this advanced work. These are challenging professional roles to fill, but much needed. There are differences between the roles: supervisors usually work within an organization and consultants are most often chosen individually for their expertise in the field.

AbstractReliable assessment of dissociation is essential for effective treatment of trauma survivors. The SCID-D Interview, considered the gold standard in the field, is an interactive, semi-structured interview for assessing dissociation in adolescents and adults (1). Over three decades of worldwide research and clinical use has proven the SCID-D’s ability to assess dissociative symptoms and disorders. Moreover, the SCID-D uncovers previously hidden dissociation in individuals suffering from PTSD, complex PTSD, and various other mental health conditions.

Fragmentation of the sense of self maintains children’s attachment to abusive caregivers by disowning themselves as “bad” or “unlovable.”   This deeply painful failure of self-acceptance results in lifelong shame and self-loathing, difficulty self-soothing, and chronic dissociative symptoms and disorders.  Without internal compassion, it is difficult to take in the compassion and acceptance of others, complicating relationships.
