Post-Level III Mini Course: Attachment and Dissociation: Developmental Origins and Clinical Applications

This course is designed to expand the understanding of attachment theory, from the lens of developmental psychology to clinical applications within the treatment of dissociation and complex trauma. It will focus on the evidence that complex PTSD, borderline (BPD) and narcissistic (NPD) personality disorders, and severe dissociative disorders (DD) are not caused by trauma alone, but by a combination of chronic interpersonal trauma and disrupted attachment.

Course Completion Requirements

Course completion requires live attendance, participation in sessions, and completion of session and overall evaluations. APA and ASWB credit cannot be awarded for watching the recording of a session. Please be advised that all courses have a course closure date, which is the last day of the month following the last session. All requirements must be completed by the course closure date. At that time, the course will no longer be accessible to participants who have pending tasks and credit cannot be retrieved at a later date. 

APA: Participants must attend all sessions live (at least 50 minutes of every 60 minutes | For a 1.5 hour session participants must be present for at least 75 minutes out of the full 90 minutes). APA Credit is not awarded for any missed sessions, nor for partial attendance that does not satisfy the aforementioned criteria. Credit will only be awarded for individual sessions in which live attendance requirements are successfully met and session evaluations are complete. At the end of the course, certificates will be automatically populated upon the completion of the final overall course evaluation. 

ASWB: Participants must attend all sessions live (at least 50 minutes of every 60 minutes | For a 1.5 hour session participants must be present for at least 75 minutes out of the full 90 minutes). If you are absent for an individual session or do not meet the aforementioned criteria, you are no longer eligible to earn ASWB credit at the completion of the course. *ASWB participants must be present and meet minute criteria for every single session throughout the course. ASWB certificates are manually processed by ISSTD staff and will be awarded via email approximately two weeks after the course closure date.

ISSTD Certificate Program: Participants must attend 5 out of 6 sessions at least 50 minutes of every 60 minutes | For a 1.5 hour session participants must be present for at least 75 minutes out of the full 90 minutes). Those who attend the required number of sessions will be awarded 30 ISSTD Certificate Program credits. No certificate is awarded for certificate program credits.

Target Audience

Those seeking to enroll in this course must be licensed mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health counselors, accredited psychotherapists, etc. who are interested in developing their skills in treating clients with complex trauma related disorders from the lens of developmental psychology and attachment theory. ISSTD staff will audit license information prior to the start of the course and may request additional documentation for your license.

Participants must have completed the following courses to be able to register for this course:

  • Level I: The Complexities of Complex Trauma
  • Level II: From Complex Trauma to Dissociative Disorder
  • Level III: Advanced Topics in Complex Trauma and Dissociative Disorders or Level III: The Assessment and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation in Children and Adolescents

This course content is at the advanced level.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the students will be able to:

  1. Describe the major organized attachment classifications and their sub-classifications
  2. Identify linguistic or behavioral markers of disorganization/dissociation and fragmentation
  3. Describe attachment theory from a developmental psychology perspective and how they relate to Developmental Trauma Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder
  4. Describe attachment internal working models and how they influence clinical treatment, including transference and counter-transference dynamics
  5. Identify clinical markers when attachment strategies begin to change and patients begin to heal

Paula Thomson, PsyD
Paula Thomson, PsyD is Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and works in private practice in California with a specialization in treating complex trauma. She is Co-Director of the Performance Psychophysiology Laboratory at CSUN where they investigate the psychophysiological effects of stress on performing artists, athletes, and healthy control participants. Several current and ongoing research studies include investigating the risk and protective factors of stress and traumatic exposure, the effects of abuse perpetrated by coaches and teachers, heart rate variability and dysautonomia, ethnic diversity related to flow, creative processing, adversity and coping strategies, and climate change anxiety. She is Professor Emeritus and Senior Scholar at York University’s Departments of Theatre and Graduate Studies (Canada). She is a reliable Adult Attachment Interview coder and actively conducts research investigating attachment, early trauma, and creativity. She is the co-author of two books, Creativity and the Performing Artist: Behind the Mask and Creativity, Trauma, and Resilience and author of multiple chapters and peer-reviewed articles. She is a Fellow with the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and a member of the Mental Health Working Group with the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. She was a professional dancer and continues work as choreographer and movement coach in dance, theatre, and opera. Past professional choreographic company work includes Canadian Opera Company, Canadian Stage Company, Stratford Shakespearean Festival, Northern Lights Dance Theatre, Ballet Jorgen, UCLA On the Edge of Chaos., and LACPA Theater of the Mind. In 2013, she was named one of the top 20 female professors in California.

Ruth A. Blizard, PhD
Ruth A. Blizard, PhD is a psychologist practicing in the Binghamton, NY, area with over 40 years of experience in treating persons with severe trauma, dissociation, and personality disorders. She received her BA in psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and her PhD in clinical psychology from Alliant University, Fresno, CA. She has presented at every ISSTD conference but one since 1995, at ESTD from 2006 - 2019, and in Germany and Isreal. Among her published articles and chapters are, “Therapeutic alliance with abuser alters in DID: The paradox of attachment to the abuser,” “The role of double-binds, reality testing and chronic relational trauma in the genesis and treatment of borderline personality disorder,” “Masochistic and sadistic ego states: Dissociative solutions to the dilemma of attachment to an abusive caretaker,” “Disorganized attachment, development of dissociated self-states, and a relational approach to treatment,” “Double binds, dissociation and attachment to the perpetrator in families and oppressive groups,” “Lost-in-the-Mall: False Memory or False Defense?” (with Morgan Shaw) and “Chronic relational trauma disorder: A new diagnostic scheme for borderline personality and the spectrum of dissociative disorders,” (with Elizabeth Howell). She has taught the official ISSTD course, “Diagnosis and Treatment of Dissociative Disorders.” She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation, and is past editor of the ISSTD News and Division 56 of the APA, Trauma Psychology News. She is currently on the ISSTD Scientific Committee, and has served on the Executive Board, Program and Membership Committees. She enjoys folk music, hiking, social activism and most of all, being a grandmother.
