AbstractPosttraumatic stress responses can take many forms. In this webinar, we will use case studies to illustrate the clinical phenomenology associated with three types of responses:classic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)the dissociative sub-type of PTSDdissociative identity disorder (DID).We also will discuss the underlying neurobiology associated with each type of response including distinctive neural circuitries. We will end this talk by discussing implications for treatment in the clinical setting.

AbstractAn iceberg floats upon a vast expanse of ocean. Beneath the surface sits a hidden mountain, the structure supporting and keeping the iceberg afloat. The iceberg invites, “Come close, but not too close, or I’ll sink you. When I sink you, I will feel momentarily safe from harm, but I will remain alone and adrift in a dark, inhospitable ocean”. This metaphor illustrates the experience of trauma clients. What is visible to the world belies what is hidden from view, the foundation upon which fears and defenses rest.
